About Me

I am a government relations and advocacy specialist with the Nova Scotia Division of the Canadian Cancer Society.  My common law partner Melinda and I live in Halifax with our cats, Julio and Toey.

I went to law school at the University of Ottawa and was called to the Bar of Ontario in 2007.  During law school, I clerked for judges of the Ontario Court of Justice and interned with the federal Department of Justice and the Office of the Commissioner of Review Tribunals. Prior to law school, I worked for five years as the Legislative Assistant to a Member of Parliament.  I am originally from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, and, before moving to Ottawa, I was a reservist in the Canadian Forces.

World Cup Round of Sixteen Predictions

Wow, in the last 24 hours I've gotten hits from the UK, the USA, New Zealand, South Africa and Singapore.  They all Googled search terms like "world cup match predictions".

Many of these surfers will no doubt have been less than impressed by my recent prediction record.  After starting the World Cup off very well, I've gone into a slump in the last few days.  However, I'm sure I'll improve now that the knock-out rounds are starting and there'll be no more draws.  On with the predictions!

Round of Sixteen Predictions

June 24
Germany vs Sweden - The hosts look like a runaway freight train and the feisty Swedes won't be able to stop them. Winner: Germany
Argentina vs Mexico - Mexico has had a good World Cup and should be able to give Argentina a fight, but I give this one to the more talented Argentinians. Winner: Argentina

June 25
England vs Ecuador - England hasn't looked impressive at all but Ecuador have overachieved to even make it this far. My gut tells me that England will pull out a win here and then bow out in the quarterfinals (as is their custom). Winner: England
Netherlands vs Portugal - This is a tough one to call since these are two very talented teams. I give the edge to the Dutch because they're battle-hardened from having had a tougher group than Portugal. Winner: Netherlands

June 26
Italy vs Australia - The Aussies have annoyed me throughout the tournament with their cheap, dirty style of play. The Italians are chronic underachievers in big tournaments, so they're vulnerable to being upset somewhere along the line, but I don't think it'll be no-talent Australia that knocks them out. Winner: Italy
Switzerland vs Ukraine - This one is interesting. The Swiss have a rock-solid defence, but Ukraine has possibly the best striker in the world in Andriy Shevchenko. It's a tough call, but I'll go with Switzerland on the theory that a good defence usually trumps a good offence. However, I wouldn't be surprised to see this one go to penalty shots. Winner: Switzerland

June 27
Brazil vs Ghana - Ghana earned a lot of respect by beating the Czechs and the Americans in the group stage, but I don't think they'll be any match for Brazil. Winner: Brazil
Spain vs France - This should be a great game between two very talented but unpredictable teams. France have struggled so far in the tournament while Spain look to be on a hot streak so, on that basis, I'm picking Spain. Winner: Spain

World Cup Prediction Update for June 21

Oh man, only six out of my eleven predictions were correct in the last three days.  I hope nobody's been wagering based on this blog!  It's the draws that are killing me.  I've rarely picked Team A to beat Team B and then Team A has lost - instead, they end up drawing or, if I predict a draw, one of the teams gets a late winning goal like Ivory Coast just did against Serbia and Montenegro.

Even though picking France has cost me in their last two matches, I'm going to stick with France against Togo.  I guess, if you're a Togo fan, that's a good sign for you. :)

Group Stage, Third Round Predictions, Groups E-F

Group E: Czech Republic and Italy will draw, USA over Ghana
Group F: Brazil over Japan, Australia and Croatia will draw
Group G: France over Togo, Switzerland and South Korea will draw

World Cup Prediction Update for June 18

Whew, I've only gotten 50% of my predictions correct in the last two days.  The French really let me down against South Korea.  I can't believe how poorly the French are playing when they have so much talent.  Italy also looked pretty bad against the Americans - the US deserved to win that game and probably would have if not for the awful referee.

Don't worry, I think I'm going to bounce back with this next set of predictions.

Group Stage, Third Round Predictions, Groups A to D
Group A: Germany over Ecuador, Costa Rica and Poland will draw
Group B: England over Sweden, Paraguay over Trinidad and Tobago
Group C: Argentina and Netherlands will draw, Ivory Coast and Serbia and Montenegro will draw

World Cup Prediction Update for June 13

What a disappointment when Japan choked in the last six minutes against Australia. They gave up a 1-0 lead at ended up losing 3-1. I was pulling for Japan to win (even though I predicted a draw) because the Aussies were playing like a bunch of thugs. I despise dirty soccer players and the Australian team has more than its share of them. Hopefully Japan can recover from the loss, because I don't want to see Australia advance to the second round.  Here are my predictions for the next few days.

Group Stage, Second Round, Predictions for Groups A to D

Group A: Germany over Poland, Costa Rica will draw with Ecuador
Group B: England over Trinidad and Tobago, Paraguay will draw with Sweden
Group C: Argentina over Serbia and Montenegro, Netherlands over Ivory Coast
Group D: Mexico over Angola, Portugal over Iran

Predictions So Far
Australia beat Japan, I predicted a draw (my record: 5-4)
Czech Republic beat USA, I called it (6-4)
Italy beat Ghana, I called it (7-4)
South Korea beat Togo, I called it (8-4)
Switzerland and France draw, I predicted a France win (8-5)
Brazil beat Croatia, I called it (9-5)

World Cup Match Predictions

Nobody reads this blog for soccer, but what the heck, the World Cup is a major distraction from studying for my bar exams...

Predictions So Far
I was out of town over the weekend and therefore didn't get my picks for the first three days of the World Cup posted before the matches were played.  I'll just ask you to believe me that I made these picks before the matches were actually played.

Costa Rica vs Germany - I picked Germany - Germany won (1-0)
Ecuador vs Poland - I picked Poland - Ecuador won (1-1)
England vs Paraguay - I picked England - England won (2-1)
Sweden vs Trinidad and Tobago - I picked Sweden - it was a draw (2-2)
Argentina vs Ivory Coast - I picked Argentina - Argentina won (3-2)
Netherlands vs Serbia and Montenegro - I picked the Netherlands - the Netherlands won (4-2)
Iran vs Mexico - I predicted a draw - Mexico won (4-3)
Angola vs Portugal - I picked Portugal - Portugal won (5-3)

Ecuador shocked the heck out of me the way they dominated Poland.  They look like they could be the underdog that goes a long way into this tournament.

Group Stage First Round Predictions
Here are my picks for the rest of the first round of matches (but please, folks, no wagering):
Monday - Australia will draw Japan, Czech Republic over USA, Italy over Ghana
Tuesday - South Korea over Togo, France over Switzerland, Brazil over Croatia
Wednesday - Spain over Ukraine, Tunisia over Saudi Arabia

I'll be back on Tuesday with my picks for the second round of matches.  Until then, enjoy the matches and, please, no hooliganism.
